Perfume’s notes - by T.C.

A good perfume applied to the skin holds approximately 24 hours. During this time the scents evaporate on the skin and waft into the nose in three distinct stages named notes of head (top note), of heart and basic.

The top note is what you first smell on the skin and motivates the desire of buy a perfume. It is formed of volatile short-lived components that last under two hours. They could be fresh citrus and light, volatile green notes, aldehyde and fruity esters (clove, cinnamon, bergamot, geranium, rosemary, lavender, anis, lemon, etc.).

The note of heart or middle note is powerful and lasts for around four hours. It often composed of flowers- (rose, jasmine, lilac, carnation, violet) and fruits (raspberry, strawberry, pear, peach) extracts; spices (cloves, pepper, cinnamon, ginger) and aromatics herbs.  It is the heart and the personality of a perfume.

The base notes take its warmth and tenacity from very long-lasting fixatives (from one to twenty-four hours) as woody scents (cedar, patchouli, sandalwood), oak moss, balsamic and animal notes (coumarin and vanillin). They represent the track of the perfume to which the women remain faithful.
