PLEASURES OF LIFE - by J.C.

Pleasures of life, the same as pains, are perceived through our common senses: Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, Touch, and a sixth one, not so conventional: “Physical Desire” identified, at least on the part of French people, since the time of Buffon. May be the interesting way of using analogies practiced by the famous French naturalist, inspired dissociation of this sixth sense from that of touching, to which it had been confounded to the age.

In any case, when considering pleasures of life, it is unquestionable that physical desire, taken or not as an additional sense to those conventional, is undoubtedly the way to the upper part, if not the top of the scale of intensity of pleasures.

Senses, on the  other hand, enable human beings to apprehend the different expressions of nature, mankind creations
, other human beings; which, stored in memory, constitute our culture: the knowledge that we accumulate through life. There is not a doubt that, at least nowadays and to this objective, sight and hearing are preponderant senses, but it is also true that smell, taste, touch and physical desire, when appropriately educated, play important roles, in some cases protagonist ones, to complete our appreciation of involved matters. It is only when, by means of one or more of these other senses, we complement our visual and/or sounding perception of, some times, so complicate entities as they can be: a complex wine, sophisticated perfumes, or another human being, that we come aware, to the light of our own subjectivity, about the circumstance of going to enjoy or suffer them.
